Earth Day Events April 21, 2017

A HUGE thank you to the parents (and a grampa and a couple tots!) who worked along side a group of our students today to fill the raised garden beds with dirt this afternoon!!  It took about an hour of intense physical labor, with a lot of helpers, but we got the job done!!
Tomorrow, the kids get to plant their seeds because you saved the day! Earth Day events start tomorrow at 9:45am at the school, beginning with an assembly, and then moving outdoors! FAMILIES WELCOME!

Raised Garden Beds & Earth Day Announcements

THIS FRIDAY - Earth Day Events @ our School - Families Welcome to Participate!!
***
Last year our school purchased 5 horse troughs to use as raised garden beds for an urban sustainably garden program starting this year! They have now been painted a light grey and delivered back to our school (the school paid for the paint, and the man hours to actually prep and paint them were donated - how NICE!) & they look great!!!... The raised beds will be positioned and filled with dirt this week... AND THEN....
Our students will be painting leafs, flowers and vines on them with acrylic paint and soon will transplant the veggies they've been growing inside the school into them (once the risk of frost passes). There are also plans to plant tall grasses around the troughs that look like wheat, to further enhance the "curb appeal" of our garden area/the front side of school. It's going to look so great!
Speaking of pretty-ing up things - Some CBE employees were out this am DONATING their time to do some major yard clean up as well - they raked, and trimmed up our trees, and cleaned up the existing rock/garden beds as well. A big thank you to them as well!!
In honour of Earth Day our school will be organizing several outdoor events (weather dependant) and kicking off the "grow your own groceries" initiative (growing vegetables at home in grocery bags), using soil and seeds donated from Co-Op (Thank you Co-Op!!). If you can, please come!!

Guest Speaker - David Bouchard Visits Pineridge School!

Very fun for the kids!! Our school arranged for David Bouchard (http://davidbouchard.com/welcome) to come talk to our students this am about early literacy and the importance of becoming good little readers.
His presentation was sooooo interesting and fun!! He told stories, and incorporated the use of various flutes to keep things interesting and suspenseful. Very well done!!  Thank you to both David and our School for this great presentation.

CASH CALENDAR FUNDRAISER

We are trying something new!  Instead of another catalogue fundraiser (our last one only made about $400.00), the Pineridge School Parent Association (PSPA) is asking our students/families to sell $10.00 raffle tickets for a “Cash Calendar”.  Tickets sold will be entered into a cash draw every school day in May, and daily prizes will range from $50.00 - $500.00!  Winning ticket stubs will be re-entered for additional chances to win!

Funds raised from ticket sales will be used to provide additional opportunities, experiences, and materials to our students they otherwise would not receive. (Such as in-school residency programs (i.e dance, athletic and theatre programs), additional field trips, and items for our school that promote interactive and engaged learning)
